Coachella Festival Hair 2018

Coachella Hair 2018

The best festival hair vibes from Coachella 2018

From space buns to neon hair and embellished braids, this year’s Coachella-goers took festival hair to another level. One of the most popular looks was the double braids using colourful hair extensions. Hairstylist Linda Ha @hairwithlinda is a master in creating festival hairstyles, and her Instagram is full of beautiful double braid styles she did for this year’s Coachella festival-goers.

This year we saw less flower crowns, and more embellished braids with all sorts of adornments, from metal “piercings” to thin leather twine woven in. Some celebrities and influencers such as Nikita Dragun and Kylie Jenner opted for fluorescent neon hair colours, while others such as Ariana Grande and Bonnie Mckee rocked more pastel looks. Which was your favourite festival hairstyle from this year?

Think you’re too old for bright hair? These ladies would beg to differ…

over 50's hair colour

20 Ladies over fifty redefine hair colour norms.

Today we are looking at ladies-who-lunch and the rise in popularity of rainbow hair colour for women over 50. One such lady who enjoys brightening up her hair with a splash of colour is Yasmin Mariess, a photographer, who gives us her views of hair colour and life over 50.

Because being yourself is in style at every age.

yasminArticle by Yasmin Mariess.

One of the joys of ‘getting older’ (I like to think of it as ‘getting wiser’) – is that you really don’t worry about what other people think about you and what you wear, or what you do with your hair. In fact, a lot of older women feel invisible, compared to our youth when we turned heads as we walked down the street, now it’s time to be visible again! What better way then, than to rock the the rainbow hair trend?

We are seeing some rockin’ grannies in the media these days, women who are unafraid to be colourful and make a statement. Being free from the constraints of work and office and the need to blend in, ladies are choosing to stand out instead with some amazing outfits and hair colours to match. Those days of the ‘pink/blue rinse’ are a distant memory as todays Glamorous Grannies go for the unforgettable colour range. Most of them come from the boomer generation, where they came of age while challenging the status quo. Most recently, they have been reshaping concepts of ageing.

Here are some amazing head turning ideas to inspire you, it’s not just the young who can pull off colourful hair, but with added confidence, anyone can do it!

Iconic older women with rainbow hair colours…

Really these famous faces need little introduction, from vivacious Vivian to the occasional colours of Helen Mirren it goes to show that you can be permanently switched on like a light bulb, or just add a touch of colour if the occasion calls for it.

Gerry Visco: The Pink Purple Makeover.

61-year-old Gerry Visco teamed up with Refinery29, Wes Sharpton and Roxie Darling at Hairstory to give her a vivid hair makeover.

Visco’s no stranger to daring hair. She’s quick to remind Refinery29 that she was one of the first people in New York City to have fuchsia hair back in the day. “They did an article about crazy-coloured hair in the Soho Weekly News in the late ’70s and the minute I saw it, I [knew] I had to have that colour!” she tells Refinery29. “It was so unusual back then — people would scream at me on the streets. People found that colour very upsetting, for some reason.” These days, people are much more accepting (even in the professor’s lounge at Columbia), so she decided to go back to her pink hair days — with a twist.

Gerry Visco says that everyone loves her new look. “I got around 200 likes on Instagram, which is a lot,” she says. It’s no surprise that when it comes to women dyeing their hair bold colors, Visco’s motto is, “Age ain’t nothin’ but a number.”

“I feel like if a person is able to pull it off, they should do it,” she says. “I think, sometimes, with older women, they’re afraid to be cool.”

“I think, sometimes, with older women, they’re afraid to be cool.”

She lists the ladies of Advanced Style and Baddie Winkle as her inspiration, saying, “There are some women who truly do enjoy dressing up [in fun styles]. They don’t think that just because they’re a little older, they can’t look good.”

Victoria MacKenzie-Childs: The Rainbow Lady

Advanced Style: Shocking pink

Photographer and author, Ari Seth Cohen from www.advanced.style captured this wonderful woman’s neon pink hair colour on camera. “I noticed a lack of older people in fashion campaigns and street style sites,” he says. “I wanted to show that you can be stylish, creative and vital at any age.”

Sandra Martin: Neither punk nor blue-rinse prissy

rebel-rebel

“Blue was just another colour to me until I went azure about 20 years ago. Since then it has become a signature, and trigger for conspiratorial high-fives from pierced and rainbow-hued young males.” author Sandra Martin tells Zoomer magazine.

“My blue hair has taught me that a tiny bit of outrageousness makes an old crone seem less threatening and more human. The other day, an ancient homeless person glanced up from the pavement he had been contemplating, shook his grizzled face and exclaimed:”Hey, love your colour. You look like a blue jay flying past.” Women stop me on buses and in washrooms to ask how I do it, as though my hair is like a blueberry meringue pie that they could make for themselves if only they had the coveted recipe.”

“Back in the late 1990s, dying your hair to match the rainbow was something only teenagers did to drive their teachers or their parents crazy. Grownup women with children and jobs didn’t indulge in such hirsute shenanigans. That’s one reason the azure plunge appealed to me. Because it is an extreme version of the blue rinse of my mother’s era, I considered it ironic and selfreferential – a postmodern colour, if you will. Besides, unlike the yucky colours that chartreuse and cerise turn as they fade, I figured blue would make my grey hair whiter as the colour wore off between applications.”

Hairdressers behind the trend…

Lets not forget the hair colour artists that are behind these colourful chic designs. These trend setters are the ones who encourage their older clients to take the plunge. Whose creativity and skills help women find their confidence and feel stylish and beautiful at any age. Proving there is no age limit to being yourself.

Hair by Alyssa Wiener

Alyssa Wiener, 23, a Stylin’ stylist who has become an Instagram sensation for her artistry with dynamic hair colour and design, said the rise in popularity of vivid colours with older clients has been fueled by a shift in thinking among customers and stylists. Wiener rarely uses vibrant colour straight out of the tube, creating unique blends and adding depth one section at a time. “It’s really more about high fashion, more vogue than grunge” she tells Andrea Bell for CT News.

“I can cover it when I really need to be a grown-up,” said Rosenbluth, a retired teacher in her late 60s, during a recent morning at Norwalk’s Stylin’ salon. “But I am at the point now that I can do whatever I want. That was my mother’s philosophy. When she turned 90, she would tell everyone, ‘I’m old. I can do whatever I want.’”

The trio is a concentrated cluster in an area where older women who have gone “true blue” are a bit more dispersed. All three say a day rarely goes by without some love for their locks.

The 72-year-old Norwalk resident, told CT News after years of watching younger customers experiment with purple, green, blue and red hues, she took the plunge. “I had bought this beautiful pink silk dress to wear to a wedding and I decided I need to put some colour in my hair to match it.”

Rainbow hair specialist Anya Goy has been colouring her Grandma’s hair rainbow colours for the last 10 years. In fact her Grandma was her very first rainbow hair model.

“I didn’t realise just how much fun coloured hair brought into my life. Most of the joy came from the reaction of young children and their mothers. Fun for the children as they pointed and embarrassment for the mothers when apologising for the children’s remarks. The colours brought sunshine into many lives other than my own.” – Anya’s Grandma.

Loraine said compliments from strangers have stopped her from being depressed and get old too fast. I love making her happy. Loraine’s been with us for 15 yrs. I hope we have her for 20 more.”

Ella Parrie‘s client, Ms. Elizabeth, had her hair coloured for the first time in her life at the age of 92. Ella tells her story…

“Ms. Elizabeth is 92 years old and has never before coloured her hair. After seeing a current guest of mine with magenta roots working at her care center, Ms.Elizabeth requested purple roots in her hair! She is on her last days and suffers from dementia, but insisted on purple roots! Ms. Elizabeth is such an inspiration, making each of her days count. I was truly honored to meet Ms.Elizabeth and to be part of something so incredibly amazing! Ms. Elizabeth teaches us that beauty and dreams are timeless.”

Glitter roots hair trend

In my 2015 Hair trends forecast I predicted that hair glitter would be the next big trend for this year. Then the glitter roots photo “How to hide your roots” went viral earlier this year. Now in the last few days this sparkly hair has taken over the internet!

It started on Instagram when Pretty Little Liars‘ Lucy Hale posted this photo. This Lucy endorsement reached 284k likes in 2 days, but the hairstyle was originally created by hair salon The Fox and the Hair.

In the last 24hrs alone this trend has been featured on Popsugar, Teen Vogue, Daily Mail‎, Buzzfeed and Boredpanda. This viral hair glitter trend has come at the perfect time, with Christmas and New Year parties its the perfect way to add some bling to your look!

How To: Make your own hair glitter tutorial…

In my post, “2015 Hair Trends Forecast” I shared the new hair glitter trend and talked about how glitter is the new chalk, because like hair chalk, glitter is super easy to do yourself at home. Hair glitter only requires 4 things, 3 steps and 2 min. Like hair chalk, glitter comes out when shampooed, so perfect for a weekend or party. But even better than hair chalk, hair glitter is not messy!! Yes you heard me right. It won’t rub off on your clothes and won’t leave stains on your pillow. The trick is to know how to do it the correct way. So first let me tell you what NOT to do…

Halloween Hair and Makeup Inspiration

Halloween Hair

Halloween Hair & Makeup Ideas

Spooky hairstyles and makeup are a fun way to complete your Halloween costume. Or in some cases if you don’t have a costume, or don’t really feel like wearing one, hair and make up can be a great alternative to dressing up. You can go as simple as adding a creepy hair accessory. Or as elaborate as brewing a cauldron of bright hair colour and summoning an undead up style… complete with extra eyeballs!

Toady I’m sharing with you some creative Halloween hair, makeup and costume ideas to help inspire you for this years night of horror.

“When hair colours are haunting and the styles make you scream,
May your hair raising look be the horror of Halloween.” – Anya Goy

6 Ways to have temporarily bright hair for Halloween…

Haunting Halloween hair colour is great fun, from pumpkin spice or graveyard grey to blood soaked reds. Here are some ideas for temporarily colourful looks…

1. Spray
Most Halloween shops or dollar variety stores will have coloured hairspray (including glitter sparys) to instantly change your locks. However these sprays will dry very hard, but every colourful strand will stay in place. They are easy to shampoo out, but be careful if you have blonde hair, as sometimes they can leave a stain.

2. Wigs
Colourful wigs are easy to get your hands on this time of year, and are a great way to completely transform your look, not just in colour, but in length and texture as well.

3. Chalk
Hair chalk is easy to use (just slide the product on dry hair) and you don’t have to worry about stickiness or buildup — you can still brush your hair or wear it down without it getting stiff. While the product is easy to rinse out with shampoo, it also has a tendency to rub/flake off on your clothes if you don’t put hairspray over it. Most come in small compacts (like eyeshadow) that’s easy to carry with you if you need touch-ups while your at the party.

4. Semi-Permanent Direct Dye
If you’ve got a few parties on and want your hair colour to last a few weeks, and already have blonde/highlighted hair, then I suggest using a direct dye. Stay with lighter/pastel colours so as to ensure the colour washes out after 2-4 washes. The good thing with direct dyes is that your hair won’t feel hard (like the spray) or flaking off (like hair chalk). I suggest using the brand Crazy Colour for a temporarily colour and mixing a bit of silicone free conditioner to dilute the colour and make sure it’s light enough.

5. Clip-In Extensions
For a completely risk-free experience, try clip-on hair extensions that you can simply take out when the night is over (no shampooing needed).

Nicole Richie’s Lilac Hair Covers Paper Magazine’s May Issue.

Tuesday, 29 April 2014 by Anya Goy
Nicole-Richie's-Lilac-Hair

Nicole Richie dyes her hair on Kelly Osbourne’s lilac dare.

32-year-old American actress, author, designer, entrepreneur and philanthropist, Nicole Richie, has coloured her hair lilac. For real this time.

It all started with a joke of sorts. On 25th Feb Nicole Richie, wife of Good Charlotte rocker, Joel Maddenher, fooled everyone. She posted on Instagram an old photo taken in 2011 for a French magazine called THAT with her hair photoshopped into lilac. (Her hair was actually blonde in the original shot). It had everyone buzzing about the new look, until people realised it was a fake.

But when Nicole’s celebrity BFF and fellow lilac-haired lady Kelly Osbourne, re-posted the photoshopped photo to Instagram she captioned “I’m in loooooove with @nicolerichie even more now I have seen this pic! I dare you to make it permanent so we can match!!!!”

Nicole took up Kelly’s dare and went to her hair colourist Dany Moon at Andy Lecompte Salon in Los Angeles and asked for lilac. Danny (who is a Pravana Artistic Council Member) used Pravana ChromaSilk Pastels to dye her hair lilac. He used Violet (Luscious Lavender) and Pastels in Mystical Mint for that just-right purple shade to match the one in her Insta pic.

“Nicole posted a picture on Instagram … of her with purple hair. The image was Photoshopped and never actually happened, but she looked great and received nothing but positive feedback after posting,” DannyMoon told People. “This planted the seed, so to say. Thanks, Instagram!”

“I dare you to make it permanent so we can match!!!!” – Kelly Osbourne

Nicole-Richie's-Lilac-Hair-photoshoped
Then on the 4th March Nicole posted the final look on Instagram…

Nicole-Richie-Lilac-Hair

“About last night…” – Nicole Richie

The end result was exactly what they had in mind. “I compare Nicole’s lavender color to the jacaranda trees that bloom in L.A. in the spring. It transforms the streets into a page straight out of a Dr. Seuss book — but this is no comic book colour,” Danny Moon says. “Nicole wears it with class and elegance.”

From start to finish, stripping to deep conditioning, the whole process took five hours — which “flew by while we anticipated the colour transformation,” Moon tells People. So how did the “colour-infused princess” (his words) react when she saw the new look? “The first thing Nicole said when she saw her finished hair was ‘I love it.’”

Kelly Osbourne later posted a photo of them both together on Instagram with the caption; “Guess took the bet & dyed there hair MY color.”

“Guess who took the bet & dyed there hair MY color.” – Kelly Osbourne

Nicole-Richie-Lilac-Hair-Cut

However she didn’t just stop with the colour. Nicole Richie also went for a new cut to complement the lilac colour. Hair stylist Jen Atkin gave her a ‘Lob’ (Long Bob) cut, and posted a pic of the new look last week (25th April) on her Instagram.

“Just Chopped @nicolerichie” – Jen Atkin hairstylist

“I love Nicole’s hair colour, but I wanted to cut her ends very blunt, and it was her idea to bring the length up a bit,” Atkin told Allure. “With this style, it’s important to keep the layers on the longer side and use scissors so it’s not too choppy and you have more versatility. This cut is very versatile—Nicole can style it wavy or straight or let it air-dry to create natural texture.”

Nicole’s new cut and colour has taken the media by storm. “Forget ombre or balayage, it seems a new hair trend is taking root amongst the celebs of Hollywood.” said the Daily Mail. “We love Nic’s new hair” – Glamour Magazine.

On Monday (28th April) her stunning new do was on the cover of PAPER Magazine’s May issue. Hair stylist Andy LeCompte for Wella Professionals at The Wall Group gave Nicole a pompadour up-style and a pretty braid in the back for the magazines photo shoot. This is a soft, yet sculptural look that can only be described as lavender couture cotton candy. Makeup was done by Lauren Anderson for AVON. Nicole was styled by Jeff Kim. The shoot was photographed by Jake Rosenberg from The Coveteur.

“Nicole is all personality and her style has been pretty transformative since her days on reality series The Simple Life with Paris Hilton. Right now she’s everything that’s hot on the stateside fashion scene – she debuted her first clothing line for House of Harlow 1960 this year – and her boho vibe totally suits.” says My Daily

“I love L.A. style because seasons don’t really play a role. I’m able to wear whatever I want, whenever I want, it gives me the opportunity to experiment and try new looks”, Nicole tells PAPER magazine in the interview.

“My idea of being a grown-up was living behind a white picket fence and changing who you were -getting a bob and wearing beige, but I found freedom through my brand and being myself and being able to do it my way.”

Nicole’s purple hair is all part of her ethos: do it your way.

“I really just want to empower people to feel like they’re strong enough to make their own decisions.” – Nicole Richie

Now feast your eyes on this stunning editorial shoot of Nicole by Jake Rosenberg from The Coveteur…
