Opal Hair: The new hair trend to hit the internet
Opal Hair started as all good trends do… with a #opalhair on Instagram. But just in the last week alone this trend has been featured on My Modern Met, Bustle, Style Icons, Huffington Post, Buzz Feed, Cosmopolitan and Popsugar. Opal hair is not a specific colour, but more of an effect.
What is Opal Hair?
Inspired by Australia’s nation gemstone, Opal hair is all your favourite hair trends in one. It’s metallic, sliver grey melting into pastels and sand art rainbows washed out. It’s reflects different tones that shimmer as you move in different lights. Opal hair can take on many colours, but unlike the neon or more vivid rainbow hair trend, opal hair colours are soft, iridescent, pearl, almost translucent cool tones, with the odd nuance and fleck of glowing brighter colour tones. Opal hair is a melt of colourless and colourful.
Aura Friedman at Sally Hershberger had been one of the hair artists driving this trend. In a recent interview, Friedman told Pop Sugar; “Opal hair is not just one colour. It’s different colours from root to end and those different colours sit on top of other colours,” Friedman explained. “It reflects a different colour every which way you look at it. If you tilt it one way you see more of the pink, and if you tilt it another way you see more of the green.”

It’s a more wearable alternative for those to shy to try vivid rainbow hair, as it is basically a toned down version of the ‘Sand Art’ look. The other beautiful thing about this trend is like the opal gemstone itself, it comes in various tones, colours and levels of intensity. Some are so subtle you could almost miss it, others are more vivid and dimensional. Each look is as unique as the stone that inspires it.
Opal Hair Inspiration…
Get the look…
Like all good trend setters, I just happened to already be rocking the opal hair myself before the internet went nuts over it last week. So a few selfies later and #opalhair, and I was super excited to see my hair was featured by The Unicorn Tribe on Instagram and in articles by Distractify and Life Buzz.
So let me give your the low down on how to create Opal hair…
4 Tips for getting Opal Hair:
- The hair must be pre-lightened. This is a must! You will need a the palest creamy blonde base. No yellow or golden undertones, or it will effect the pastel and metallic shades you apply over the top. You would be best to get this done at a salon, preferably that uses Olaplex, as it’s the safest way to achieve this difficult tone without compromising the condition of your hair.
- Make your own pastels. While you can buy pastel direct dyes (such as Manic Panic Cotton Candy) it is more cost effective to buy a darker colour (such as Arctic Fox Virgin Pink) and dilute the colour to a pastel tone using a silicone free conditioner. You will want mostly conditioner with just a pea size amount of the dye.
- Leave some blonde. Leave out some areas or streaks of the creamy blonde base colour, when your rinse the pastels off they will pick up the slightest tone, adding to that iridescent, pearl effect.
- Glow. To get the flecks of glowing tones, use UV neon colours, and dilute them into pastel. Use these sparingly and scattered in the application.
